Academia.edu Account Closed

Due to their new Terms of Service (from Sept. 16, 2025), I had to close my Academia.edu account. The problematic terms include an “irrevocable” license granted by members to Academia.edu to use their content and personal information “in any manner” (see screenshot below).

By creating an Account with Academia.edu, you grant us a worldwide, irrevocable, non-exclusive, transferable license, permission, and consent for Academia.edu to use your Member Content and your personal information (including, but not limited to, your name, voice, signature, photograph, likeness, city, institutional affiliations, citations, mentions, publications, and areas of interest) in any manner, including for the purpose of advertising, selling, or soliciting the use or purchase of Academia.edu's Services.

If you log in for the first time after the release of their new ToS, you will be asked to agree to them. But there is a workaround: Click the “Privacy Policy” link, and you will be able to access your account settings to delete your account.

This information and the workaround were shared by Nick Posegay in September 2025.
